Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ cup Crisco shortening
  • ½ cup water
  • Greased cast-iron pan

Directions

  1. Mix the dry ingredients together, then cut in the shortening.
  2. Add water and knead for approximately 15 minutes.
  3. Grease a cast-iron pan and press the dough into it.
  4. Cook on the stovetop over low heat until the bread releases freely from the pan without sticking, about 10 minutes, then flip it.

Notebook transcription

The original handwritten page is heavily faded. The creator confirmed the ingredients and clarified that the last instruction concerns cooking on the stove over low heat and flipping after about ten minutes. The creator clarified that “free” means the bread no longer sticks to the pan and can be flipped. The notebook does not clearly record a second-side cooking duration or yield.
