Layered Salad

Original community recipe submitted by Jane Bradley.

Gather

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head lettuce, torn into pieces
  • ¼–½ cup chopped or sliced onion (print is faint)
  • ½ cup sliced celery
  • 1 can sliced water chestnuts, drained
  • 1 box frozen peas
  • 1 cup margarine (as printed; unusual amount, verify before preparing)
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • ½ cup Parmesan cheese

Prepare

Directions

  1. The day before serving, arrange lettuce, onion, celery, water chestnuts and frozen peas in layers in a straight-sided bowl, in that order.
  2. The source instructs mixing margarine with sugar and spreading this over the top of the five ingredients. Because the printed 'margarine' quantity is unusual for a layered salad, verify against the source before making.
  3. Sprinkle Parmesan over the top. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  4. Mix just before serving.

Kitchen Notes

The source appears to read '1 cup margarine.' This may be a printing mistake for mayonnaise, but no substitution has been made without confirmation. Uncertain onion amount is flagged rather than invented.
