From Mother’s notebook · Original formula
Magic Cleaner
Ingredients
- 2 oz Dawn dish soap
- 4 oz bottled lemon juice
- 8 oz white vinegar
- 16 oz water
Directions
- Combine the water, bottled lemon juice and vinegar in a clean container. Add the Dawn and mix gently to avoid excessive foam. These mixing steps are editorial clarification; the notebook lists the ingredients without a detailed mixing sequence.
- Original stubborn-buildup directions: Spray onto the surface, leave overnight, then wipe with a clean cloth. Follow with a wet cloth to remove residue.
- Original shower note: “Shower: spray & rinse.” This appears to indicate a shorter spray-and-rinse use.
Family notebook notes
The handwritten title is “Magic Cleaner.” The original formula gives 2 oz Dawn, 4 oz bottled lemon juice, 8 oz white vinegar and 16 oz water. The overnight instruction is retained verbatim in meaning as a historical method; the page also has a shorter “shower spray & rinse” note. The photographed recipe is not crossed out, but successful testing has not been independently established.
Book Two variant
A loose page at the start of Mother’s second notebook repeats the same Dawn, lemon juice, and vinegar quantities. Its water measurement appears to read 10 oz, rather than the 16 oz shown in Book One; the handwriting is faint, so this is preserved as a possible variation rather than a confirmed correction. It also says to leave the spray on a wet surface overnight and wipe with a clean cloth, or spray showers and rinse.
Surface precautions
The vinegar and lemon juice make this acidic; avoid natural stone (including marble and limestone), damaged grout, unsealed stone and acid-sensitive finishes. Test on a hidden spot and follow the surface manufacturer’s cleaning directions. Leaving an acidic cleaner overnight can damage some materials, so do not use that soaking time without confirming compatibility. Do not mix with bleach or other cleaners. Thoroughly rinse away any slippery soap residue, especially in showers.
