Mother’s Three Weed-Killing Methods

Ingredients

  • Method 1: Distilled water (quantity unclear); white vinegar or apple cider vinegar; Dawn dishwashing liquid (quantities unclear)
  • Method 2: 2 Tbsp rubbing alcohol and 1 quart water
  • Method 3: Boiling water

Directions

  1. Vinegar method: The notebook says to use a spray bottle and apply on a sunny day. The exact first-line quantity and ingredient wording are difficult to read.
  2. Rubbing alcohol: Combine 2 tablespoons rubbing alcohol with 1 quart water. Use on a sunny day and spray directly on weeds, avoiding other plants.
  3. Boiling water: Saturate the weeds with boiling water. The final note appears to say to use a kettle with a spout.

Original notebook

This page lists three numbered weed-control methods in orange ink. The wording and measurements of the first method are not fully legible. The page is preserved as family garden notes rather than a single recipe.

Practical precautions

These treatments can injure desirable plants as well as weeds. Boiling water can cause severe burns. Rubbing alcohol is flammable, so avoid heat, flames and smoking. Avoid applying any treatment near sensitive plants or waterways.
