Pandemic Preparedness Kit

A historical planning checklist from the creator's notebook for putting together household supplies during an infectious-disease emergency.

Notebook supplies checklist

  • Steramine tablets (surface sanitizing tablets, not drinking-water purification tablets)
  • Bleach
  • Lysol and antibacterial soap
  • Sanitizers and antiseptics
  • NIOSH masks, goggles, Tyvek suits, gloves and bouffant caps
  • Anti-diarrheal medicine and disposable thermometers
  • Toilet paper, tissues, emesis bags, adult diapers and biohazard bags
  • Probiotics, supplements and vitamin D
  • Thieves oil and elderberry extract
  • Duct tape and plastic cloth/sheeting
  • Portable radio and batteries

Organizing the research

The notebook is a shopping and preparation list, not a procedure or a confirmed inventory. For future preparation, organize items by function: cleaning and disinfection; respiratory and eye protection; personal care and medical basics; hygiene and waste handling; communication and power; and optional personal supplements.

Check the expiration dates, fit, intended use and storage requirements of supplies before relying on them.

Safety and accuracy notes

Keep bleach separate from other cleaners and use each product only according to its label; do not mix disinfectants. Sanitizing tablets made for surfaces are not necessarily safe for drinking water. Only use products explicitly labeled for potable-water treatment for water purification.

Protective masks and clothing need to be appropriate to the hazard and properly fitted. Thieves oil, elderberry and supplements are included because they appear in the notebook, not because they have been shown to prevent or treat pandemic infections. Duct tape and plastic sheeting do not substitute for ventilation, suitable respiratory protection or official health advice.

Project status

The creator confirms this page is future research as part of her household self-reliance planning; it is not a kit she has said she assembled or tested.
